COLLEGE STUDENTS
Our chapter encourages interaction between the professional and student members. We encourage
students to attend the regular meetings and interact with other members. Networking at our meetings
provides students with an added advantage when they begin their career searches for full-time positions.
During the academic year, we help students with job searches by compiling a resume booklet for
distribution to local companies.
At the annual Young Members Night (held every February), poster competition awards and scholarships
are available for student members to assist them with tuition and related expenses. The guidelines for the
2009 poster competition will be available here later this year.
If you are a sophomore or junior majoring in Materials Science AND a member of ASM or a child of an ASM
Pittsburgh member, you are encouraged to apply for the annual Past Chairpersons' Education Assistance
scholarship. The application will be available here in late 2008.
In addition, our Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh student chapters are very active during the
academic year and these chapters provide additional opportunities for students to become involved.
Please contact your local chairs for more information on how to become involved or visit the
http://www.materialadvantage.org website for more information.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Chapter of ASM International offers an annual Gilbert Soler Memorial
Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to the high school senior who best personifies the
commitment to excellence that is associated with Mr. Soler’s memory.
Applications for 2009 have closed.
Gilbert Soler Memorial Scholarship Background:
Since 1965, the Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Chapter of ASM International has annually honored Gilbert
Soler by awarding scholarships in his name to an outstanding high school senior who will study engineering
in college. The honor is most fitting because of Gilbert Soler’s outstanding character, metallurgical
expertise, and enthusiasm for promoting student interest in metallurgy and engineering.
Gilbert Soler was educated in Columbus, Ohio achieving both a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering in 1932 and a
M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Ohio State University. His career included positions as Research
Engineer with Republic Steel (1931), Assistant General Superintendent of Operations and Technology with
Timken Roller Bearing Company (1932-1942), and Vice-President of Manufacturing with Atlas Steel (1946-
1952). From then until his untimely death in 1961, he was Technical Director of Universal-Cyclops Steel.
Throughout his career, he emphasized developing the talents of his engineers, and using the most modern
technologies for producing improved-quality high-duty steels and superalloys.
Gilbert Soler was a leader in the Pittsburgh Golden Chapter of ASM. He gave freely of his time and
knowledge in many talks to students and teachers, promoting interest in metallurgy and engineering. In
1959-1960, he was the Chapter’s Chairman. He was respected as a gentleman who would give the
attention required to do a job well.
Continuing the involvement of Gilbert Soler in the Chapter’s work with young people is a proud tradition.
We commend his commitment to excellence to young people in general and to applicants for his scholarship
in particular. This year’s scholarship is worth $ 1000 and will be awarded to the high school senior who
best personifies that commitment to excellence, based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities,
and future promise. In the unlikely event that the selection committee feels that there are no qualified
applicants, no award will be made.
